Diamond Colour

When discussing diamond colour, we’re typically referring to the lack of colour in the stone. Even the slightest variations in hue, from noticeable to subtle, can significantly impact both the quality and value of a diamond. Fortunately, assessing diamond colour is not subjective; it requires a high level of expertise to evaluate accurately.

Diamond Clarity

Every diamond is unique. Clarity characteristics are created when small crystals are trapped in the diamond. As they grow, pressure and stress can cause inclusions and blemishes—sometimes only visible under a microscope. The clarity of a diamond is based on the size, position, visibility and number of these inclusions or blemishes.

Diamond Cut

Diamond cut, one of its most defining features, refers to the way a diamond interacts with light. Terms such as Brightness, Scintillation, and Fire are used to describe the brilliance and sparkle that result from a diamond’s precise cut. The cut also encompasses the diamond’s overall design, including the arrangement and proportions of its facets. With an almost endless array of possible proportions, each unique combination influences how the diamond captures and reflects light.

Diamond Carat Weight

Carat weight refers to the weight of a diamond, not its size. The term “carat” originates from the use of carob seeds, a practice dating back to the 1500s, to measure gemstones. Today, carat weight is a standardized metric measurement, with one carat equating to 200 milligrams. This global standard ensures consistency and accuracy in diamond weight measurement across the world.

The 4Cs are the global standard

GIA’s introduction of the 4Cs revolutionised diamond quality assessment, fundamentally changing how diamonds are evaluated, purchased, and sold. The 4Cs—cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight—serve as a universal framework for everyone, offering a clear understanding of a diamond’s unique characteristics while ensuring accuracy in its evaluation.

This standardised approach is the gold standard for providing clear, consistent, and scientifically-backed information in the global diamond industry. The 4Cs are just one of GIA’s many pioneering contributions, and we take immense pride in how this system continues to empower consumers.
